in the field of digital and cross-media journalism in a glocal perspective
This Good Practice Catalogue is part of the research phase of the eMEDia project and outlines a set of good practices in journalism education with the aim to inform the subsequent phases of the project and the design of the Master Course in cross-media journalism.
Digital technologies are changing journalism in ways that cause a major shift in both the practice of news organizations and the curriculum of journalism education. Basic skills, such as writing and grammar, and the general knowledge and the news sense, still remain important but there is also increasing need to manage multimedia skills and to understand digital platforms.
The concept of cross-media describes communication (or news production) where two or more media platforms are involved in an intergrated way. (Erdal 2011, 214). What journalism students need to learn is how the diverse media channels complement each other and how to coordinate the journalistic work between these channels.
In the eMEDia project interviews were made with several professional journalists and other experts in order to learn about good practices in cross-media journalism. In addition, case study analysis and desk research were conducted in order to create a bottom-up approach for teaching cross-media journalism.
The eMEDia Project interviewed media professionals, both journalists and academics, on the promises and challenges of cross-media journalism. Some of their ideas and visions of journalism and examples of good practices in journalism education can be found in these interview clips and summaries:
